JASTA 14 LANDS

FOKKER DR.I 160/17 - DANNY VAN MOSSEVELDE

FROM THEN AND NOW

RICHARD ANDREWS

JASTA 14 - PART I

Jagdstaffel (Jasta) 14 was created in the second half of 1916 and until early 1918 deployed in the French sector of Lorraine. This partially accounted for its below average victory scores, even under the spirited 10-month leadership of Oberleutnant Rudolf Berthold, the "Iron Man". The Jasta flew numerous Albatros types, the unit being moved nearer the action on the "Western Front", being stationed at Boncourt, as part of the 1st Army, where it remained until March 1918.

In early 1918 it became the only Jasta, outside of the three newly formed Jagdgeschwader, to be solely equipped with the Fokker triplane, as the unit's Albatros D.Va's were traded in for the already obsolete Dr.I's.

Aviattic's Jasta 14 line-up features 4 very nice and unique schemes. In addition, several Fokker Dr.I's of Jasta 14 feature cowlings with enlarged cooling holes that helped them survive the summer. These tailored cowlings are available both in 1/24 and 1/32 scale and are part of the bundles.

Many credits to my contributors, in particular Danny Van Mossevelde for providing some unique photographs.

1/24 - BUNDLE SET - LARGE

160/17 - JOSEF SCHULTE

Ltn. der Reserve Schulte had two Dr.I's similarly painted with a wound stripe over the units vertical black and white vertical fuselage band. He crashed both and no known photographs can confirm their serial numbers.

1/24 - BUNDLE SET - LARGE

574/17 - PILOT UNKNOWN

Late production DR.I with smaller axle wing. The unusually proportioned national marking alterations show that not all ground crew fully understood the confusing directives from Idflieg when re-painting!

1/24 - BUNDLE SET - LARGE

588/17 - HANS WERNER

The second of two similarly painted DR.I's of Ltn. Werner. whilst under his ownership it retained the original 'Eisernes Kreuz' (Iron Cross) national markings and he had added red to the vertical fuselage bands.

Confusion over serial numbers in several British capture reports has meant that positive identification is difficult - 583/17 is another possibility.

1/24 - BUNDLE SET - LARGE

588/17 - REINHOLD PREISS

This machine was passed on to new pilot Ltn. Reinhold Preiß, who was brought down eleven days later on the 9th August 1918. he was captured alive and made a P.O.W.

By that time it had the fuselage and rudder national insignia updated in line with Idflieg orders but not the wings.

JASTA 14 - PART II

In early 1918 it became the only Jasta, outside of the three newly formed Jagdgeschwader, to be solely equipped with the Fokker triplane, as the unit's Albatros D.Va's were traded in for the already obsolete Dr.I's.

The aircraft were quickly given the units favoured black and white horizontal striped markings, further embellished with pilot's own individual emblems. The pilots all hoped for them to be soon replaced with the new Fokker D.VIIs - but they never came. Jasta 14 was the only unit never to receive an example. Political machinations and personnel changes kept the unit from realising it's true potential as it was relocated to Masny, South of Lille and then the makeshift, tented aerodrome at Phalempin, which it shared with Jasta 30.
